'Govt failing to provide 100 days work'

BHUBANESWAR: Agricultural labourers have come down sharply on the Central Government for not realising the minimum 100 days job guarantee despite the hype on implementation of the programme.

The All India Agricultural Labour Association, which is holding its National Council meeting here today said that an intense labour movement would be launched across the country against the failure of the Government to protect the rights of the poor and fulfil its promises made to them.

Around 100 representatives from 12 states have attended the two-day meet.

General secretary of AIALA Dhiren Jha said that the UPA Government’s inaction in initiating steps to curb the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities and food items had hit the poorer sections hard. A vast chunk of the people in the country are being forced to lead lives in acute hunger and misery as basic food items have gone beyond their reach. The AIALA has demanded supply of all essential items through PDS to the poor.

The meeting has also strongly opposed the displacement of people and tribals for industries. Advocating forest dweller’s right on the forest and forest land, the council has demanded adoption of a mechanism to establish large entitlement for forest dwellers.
