Kolkata, Aug 28 : The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has advised airport authorities to issue an Advisory Note to the passengers travelling to Nepal regarding prohibition of use of Rs.500 and 1000 Indian Rupee notes in Nepal by the Government of Nepal.

The Advisory Note reads: "Indian currency in the denomination of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 are banned in Nepal. These notes are liable to be seized and the persons carrying them liable to be fined or imprisoned for upto three years. You are advised to exchange the high denomination notes with currency notes in smaller denomination of Rs.100 or below."

On June 30, Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen was arrested for carrying Indian currency notes, which are banned in Nepal.

According to reports, Imchen was carrying a suitcase full of Indian notes of 500 and 1000 denominations. He was arrested at the Kathmandu international airport.

The Minister was later interrogated by security agencies, but he reportedly failed to convey if he has received permission from authorities for carrying the currencies.
