Calling the
Dhaula Kuan rape case convicts ‘psychopaths’ and a ‘threat to society’,
a Delhi court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to the five accused
in the 2010 gang-rape of a BPO woman executive from the north-east.
The
court, on October 14, had convicted the five accused on the basis of
their DNA reports and relying and the victim's testimony, who had
identified two of the accused after the first arrest was made and later
helped in apprehending the rest of them.
After
the incident, Delhi Police ordered all BPOs in Delhi and the National
Capital Region to drop women employees home after their shift ends.

declaring the sentence, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Virender Bhat,
in his seven-page order, said that itis the demand of justice that they
(convicts) should be kept away from the society as long as possible,
adding that the rape victim has to live with the scar of rape for the
rest of her life.
"Rape
is a serious blow to the honour, dignity and womanhood of the victim
and besides causing immense trauma to her, it has an everlasting impact
upon her mind as well as soul," the judge said.
He awarded the maximum sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of them.
The court also said that such incidents diminish the victims’ marriage prospects.
According to reports, the victim has quit her job and is now facing financial hardship.
"This amply indicates the impact of rape on a victim,” the judge said.
The
judge also said that the society also looks upon this crime with utmost
indignation and aberration and expects the perpetrators of the crime to
be dealt with sternly.
The
court had convicted five men - Shamshad alias Khutkan, Usman alias
Kale, Shahid alias Chhota Billi, Iqbal alias Bada Billi and Kamruddin -
on October 14 and found them guilty of abducting and raping a call
centre executive in Delhi in 2010.
According
to the police, the convicts had abducted the victim from South Delhi’s
Dhaula Kuan area on the intervening night of November 23- 24, 2010 when
she was returning home from her office in Gurgaon.
