A Patanjali Yogapeeth spokesman claimed that the decision to shift Ramdev to a hospital was taken by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, who gave directions to Haridwar District Magistrate in this regard.
The 46-year-old yoga guru is being "taken to Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences in Dehra Dun", G S Martolia, SSP, Dehra Dun, told PTI.
There was commotion at the ashram as some of Ramdev's supporters protested the district administration's move to shift him to hospital.
Some protestors even clashed with police when the yoga guru, who is on a fast against corruption and black money, was being taken on a stretcher. However, it was resolved immediately with the help of ashram authorities.
Doctors, who examined Ramdev in the morning, had said that he needed immediate hospitalisation.
"His blood pressure is 104/70 which is low and pulse rate is 58 per minute which is also low. If his pulse rate and BP continue to go down, it may put some pressure on his heart. We found that his health is going down. It is worrisome," Chief Medical Officer Yogesh Chandra Sharma said after the medical examination.
A close aide of Ramdev, Swami Sampoornand, claimed that the yoga guru had gone into an "unconscious state".
The doctors attending on him had sent in a recommendation for his hospitalisation on "priority basis" as they had found him suffering from dehydration and had advised him to break his fast, which rejected by the yoga exponent.

Ramdev loses 1.5 kg, doctors say health deteriorating
With Baba Ramdev's condition further deteriorating Friday, doctors monitoring him stated that his "weight loss" and "low pulse rate" were causing concern.
"Baba (Ramdev) has lost 1.5 kg weight in the last one day. His pulse rate is also falling. If it decreases further, it is a matter of concern," said Yogesh Kumar Sharma, chief medical officer (CMO) of Haridwar, as the yoga guru continued his fast for the seventh day.
Doctors have also observed negative changes in Ramdev's kidney functioning.
"His urine examination showed the presence of albumin, which is a bad indication in terms of kidney functioning," he said.
The team earlier advised Ramdev to get hospitalised. "The team has observed his situation. He is suffering from dehydration, and his condition has deteriorated," said Sharma, adding that the yoga guru has lost "5.5 kg since Saturday".
Ramdev Thursday took lemonade and honey at the request of doctors. The yoga guru has been on a fast unto death here after being forced to move out of Delhi's Ramlila Ground Saturday midnight.

Social activist Anna Hazare Friday criticised the government for ignoring yoga guru Baba Ramdev's deteriorating health and said it should show some humanity.
"The government should look into this matter with a more humane approach. A citizen has a right to protest according to the constitution," Hazare told reporters here.
"It is not wrong for people to strike, stage protest and raise their voices against the system in a democracy," he added.
