The "Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign" (SSSC), a nationwide yatra against the controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) showing solidarity with civil rights activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, reached Manipur on Thursday.
The yatra would conclude at Sharmila's prison hospital -- Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital -- in the state Imphal.
Sharmila has been on a protest fast since 2000 seeking withdrawal of AFSPA.
The 4,500 km march was flagged off in mid-October from Srinagar. The march organised to generate public opinion for the withdrawal of the law from Jammu & Kashmir and the North East has passed through 10 states so far.
Noted social activists, including Medha Patkar, Aruna Roy, Binayak Sen, author Arundhati Roy and a host of intellectuals and activists have supported the campaign.
The organisers also plan to meet President Pratibha Patil with signatures collected from different parts of the country.
Activist Faisal Khan said, "Political parties have agreed with us... All party delegation will take it up.... We are showing solidarity with the movement. Sharmila and her team will take the issue of AFSPA."
