New Delhi: India has agreed "in-principle' to the participation of Bangladesh in hydro power-projects in the North-East, a top Bangladesh official said on Thursday.
Bangladesh is looking to participate in the hydro power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Mizoram.
"India has agreed in-principle, and I hope that we will be able to bring to fruition Bangladesh's participation in selected (hydro) projects in the North East of India in the next two-three months," Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tariq-A-Karim said here.
"Ideally, we would like to have power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Mizoram," he said at an event organised by CII.
Karim also said Bangladesh would be interested to take part in gas-based or coal-based power projects in the Indian states which are adjoining to Bangladesh.
"We have also put on record our desire to enter into gas or thermal power projects in the other area adjoining Bangladesh, initially Tripura and would be happy to do in some parts of West Bengal," he added.
Bangladesh has 7,600-MW power generation capacity now. Meanwhile, India's largest electricity producer NTPC has agreed to supply 250-MW power to Bangladesh recently, a move that will help strengthen trade ties between the two nations.
A transmission system between the two countries is likely to be completed by the end of July, 2013.
