Bandhs over demand for states cripples life in Assam

Bandhs demanding statehood for three tribal regions in Assam have paralysed normal life in parts of the state on Tuesday.
Normal life was hit in North Cachar Hills and Karbi Anglong districts due to twin bandhs called by the Dimasas and the Karbis as well as in the six Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Councils of lower Assam where the shut down is being sponsored by different Bodo organisations, officials said.
The 36-hour bandh in N C Hills and Karbi Anglong has been called by Dimasa People’s Council and All Dimasa Students Union, while another 60-hour bandh has been called by the Autonomous State Demand Committee. The Bodo bandh is for 40 hours.
All shops, commercial and business establishments, and educational institutions remained closed due to the bandhs, which began simultaneously at 5 am.
Private and long-distance vehicles too remained off the roads.
There was, however, no report of any untoward incident from any part of the state.
The demand for tribal states for Dimasas, Karbis and Bodos has been revived after the Centre accepted the demand for a separate Telangana state.
